OFFALY singer/songwriter Brendan Keeley's hit single 'Heart and Soul' has been chosen as the anthem for a German gun control campaign started by victims and the bereaved following a school shooting in the country earlier this year.
On March 11 last eleven children and four teachers were shot dead whilst at school in the quiet town of Winnenden near Stuttgart. The shooter was a former student at the school who was later shot dead by police.
Since then the parents of those who were killed in the horrific incident have joined together as a group and have started a foundation to lobby the German government into changing the current gun lawsAs part of their awareness programme, they plan to release the CD on November 13. They specifically wanted to release a song 'which would strike the emotions of anyone who hears it'.
They chose 'Heart and Soul', one Brendan Keeley's many hits. The parents group, known as 'Wir Fur Winnenden', were struck by the poignant lyrical content of Brendan’s song which is all about never giving up.
'Heart and Soul' which in German is 'Wir geben niemals auf' and was translated by Brigitte Santos. The song was recorded in Schorndorf Germany in October and features many prominent German singers and musicians.
It will be released on November 13 throughout Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and it is expected to climb all the way to the top of the German charts.
Meanwhile, Brendan is busy releasing his new album 'Under a Celtic Sky' in Britain. It will also be released in the USA early next year.
Brendan is taking a break from recording and is playing a rare concert with his seven piece band at The Riverbank Theatre, Newbridge, County Kildare on Thursday November 19.
The show will feature all his hits to date and tickets can be purchased at www.riverbank.ie
